“You really think you can solve things with a drink?” Even the sneer had returned.

“No I don't, Bob. I'm not that stupid.”

“Good!”

He turned away from me, sorted out drinks for the two bikers and only returned to demand payment. I sighed, all the bridges that had been built with Bob Archer over the past few months were now floating away down the river. It was only then that I realised that I couldn't see Shepherd. Walking down to the other end of the bar, I saw him sitting with Tony Carr, the owner of the little cafe that we often stopped at. I pulled over a seat and joined them.

“Mr Malone,” he laughed, extending his hand, “it's been a real good night in here tonight. Best entertainment in years.”

“That's one way of looking at it.”

“Will you both be in for a bacon bap in the morning?”

“Maybe – unless there are any more punch-ups to sort out.” Finally I felt a smile return to my face. “You ready, lad?”

Shepherd got to his feet and after making our farewells, we left Tony to his pint and his paper and headed towards the door, only to be met by Leverson whose face was looking decidedly puffy.

“It's gone, Sir!” He whispered.

“What has?”

“The package, Sir. It's not there. Someone's taken it.”

The blood rushed from my face and into my shoes. This was now not just a disaster but a catastrophe. Not only had I lost the money from the Police Fund that I had promised to safeguard, but I was no nearer to finding the phantom money-lender. After all, now that Ross' debt had been repaid, he wouldn't be hearing from the man again. I sighed deeply while inside my head my thoughts were busy trying to write a letter of explanation to the Chief-Super. Although, maybe it should actually be a letter of resignation.
